American artist, connoisseur, and art dealer, born Mar. 17, 1822 in New York City; died there on Aug. 11, 1904. Avery began his career as an engraver on copper and wood, then established himself as an art dealer in 1865, making annual purchasing trips to Europe each year between 1871 and 1882. The genre painter Ludwig Knaus was a successful German painter. He became a professor at the Kunstakademie Dü̈sseldorf, and later, in 1874, moved to Berlin, where he taught at the Akademie der Künste until 1882.
